My art studio

My art studio is in my basement. The basement is nothing fancy, it gets wet in a few spots when it rains heavy. I finally built a wall down the end of the open half so my art can stay in one central spot. I have a habit of working wherever I plop down. This keeps me and all my art STUFF contained to these four walls.

I have it fairly organized which for me is a huge thing! I have two huge work benches. One I got from helping an old professor move. The other is parts I dug out of a dumpster at work when they remodeled the studio set for a new look on tv. Both free. Pretty much all the other shelving and wood you see are also dumpster finds. There is a big drain in the floor that is good for spills if I had one. I can be as messy as I want!!! I got a big deep plastic sink from a farm auction last summer for anything I need water for. I love my studio, except the brown recluse that are in abundance.

My iPhone goes everywhere with me and I take lots of pics and videos. I also get bored easily and edit my own photos on my phone. I have over 80 cameras and editing apps. It's a virtual creative Mecca in my pocket! I also sketched old school the dog paw and my puppy. :)

Carbondale Art/Wine fair

Well we thought this fair would make us a lot of money. Boo we were wrong. We didn't even get our gas money or entry fee back out of it. It wasn't enough to make me mad but I'm not sure if I'm going to do the other fair we paid for in October? Maybe yes but with less stuff? Who knows. It didn't look like anyone was carrying bags while walking around. I think they just came for the wine. But chalk it up to experience and you never know till you try!

I have been invited to show with the local art co-op located inside the arts council building. I was a member years ago and joined again this year. The co-op has all three gallery spaces in march which allows for everyone to put in three pieces. I also got asked to put art up in the window and chose my new collages and art dolls. Excited about the opening tonight, now let's sell some pieces!!!!!

huge solo show at the Humane Society...

the first time the artdogs are in public!!! i had lots of feedback but didn't sell any. and i even bid on my cardinal dog to keep him, so i paid 27.50 right after finishing him for the show. i want to submit them to an artdoll magazine and maybe hit the radar through that outlet for their quality and craft.

i watched a woman reading this story about a dog to five young children. this is exactly what i had planned for this artwork which were not for sale. i want the pieces to be educational and to open a dialogue.

i sold 4 12x12 prints and one 10x10 print!! $75% went to the Humane Society!!! this was great since they are Humane Society animals!

the show was overall a big success for this town. we made $402 for the shelter and i made $151 so i think it was well worth it. we had about 100 people show up which was not as many as i wanted to see. :( but i can say there were a lot of other things to do that night and we were outside of town. the shelter didn't have to pay for anything which was a bonus, we got all things donated or we paid for them ourselves between a few of us who got behind this show... we plan to get the art students at the high schools involved next show. parents and family of kids will come out in droves!!!! and hopefully have checkbooks out and ready. :)

i encourage ALL artists to make a piece of art for http://www.aplacetobark.com/ it is such a great cause and the woman running the shelter/rescue does wonders with little money. donations of artwork would go a long way for the dogs she takes care of!

anyone who knows me knows i fight for the fair treatment of all animals. crap our poor intern at work had no idea what he was asking for when i saw him about to squash a random bug OUTSIDE during one of our stories recently... i was like 'What the hell are you doing?" as i see him getting ready to mush it...and he says, "killin a bug" to which i threatened him a long walk the hour back to the station if he remotely followed through with his intentions. WTF? he was outside -in the bugs space? (ok so i am not perfect, i do kill Brown Recluse spiders which we have an abundance of in our house this season. grrrr)

i have been feeling very creative lately and just made these two fiber pieces this weekend. i felt recharged mentally hammering rusty nails into fabric -to the ground. i have zero idea what i am doing with these fiber pieces but it makes me healthy again. to make art is very therapeutic, so that is why i encourage you to donate a piece of art to the above link. it will help you AND the dogs.

the two i have recently finished are the fairydog and pooldog. photos are as follows. all of their clothes are pieced together with thrift store bought clothing i then cut up and sew directly onto the dog.

she is hand-stitched and is sporting fancy wings.

pooldog is making sure he doesn't get a sunburn with his lotion and he thinks safety first with his stylish arm floaties.

gone, that's where i have been.
on multiple levels.
vacation to the white sandy beaches of florida.
big time 48hr film festival, by myself & sick.
month long infection of sinus/lungs.
many dr. visits with a recent ER trip in there.
allergic reaction to a second antibiotic.
house arrest from dr for 4 days due to my allergic reaction?!
who'da thought the sun was the cause of the reaction?
stress from two of my special needs dogs needing extra, extra, extra

you may think this is a complaint post, but alas...
i have pulled through, still breath and had an enormous breakthrough in my art

H.U.G.E.

i think i have my niche. a "thing"
i can grow this from a love of animals (dogs)
and possibly make other people happy as well. (&make my wife a million dollars) ;)

ArtDogs ---that is what i am calling them.

three of these ArtDogs have "come about", pouring out of my imagination which at times i can't seem to shut off. i have taken to carrying around a little pocket sized blank book to write all this insanity into. i dream about things and write them down, a color, a shape. my mind just won't stop spinning from all of these ideas. i can build things in my mind before i actually build them in the real world. crazy i know...a form of problem solving with-out the screw-ups. (usually) :) i have sooo many more of these dogs ready to be made...

everything i have made has brought me to these ArtDogs and i am more excited about these than anything i have created thus far. and people you have no idea the amount of art i have created. this photo isn't the greatest and the girl on the left isn't finished shown here.

so this may be a bit of a ramble...

we just got back from vacation
it was at the beach.
i love the beach

i swam at one point with stingrays, wild stingrays all around me. amazing...

since i have no family i have no ties to "anywhere".
and thinking about this makes me want to live in a place that i like.
i think we will live at the beach. we were happy photos soon to follow.

Score one for the starving artist

So whatever was put into my head about art fairs was completely abolished yesterday. I had an amazing time, made some AWSOME money, and met really cool people. Not one buthead. It didn't have the air of a gallery. It's like comparing apples and oranges. The variety I had was impressive and people bought from all types of art that I do. This also tells me the "painter" "sculpture" BOX most artists put themselves into isn't me, I do it all! I'm an artist and I sold over 40+ pieces of art. (I should have kept a tally?) I sold to all types of cool people and love the fact that my art will hang on their walls! One woman is even sending a collage to her sister (an engineer) to Harlem, NY. Umm yeah my bucket list is to show in NY, and in a twisted sort of way this kinda maybe counts!! At least in my twisted head. :) I have been invited to two other art fairs and think I will look into them in a serious way! Who knows that "right person " might see my art and I may get into a "big city" gallery! Heck yeah.

And on a side note the side business I want to start was tested yesterday and came to be a huge success. So I think I will continue with my website building and marketing for it... Maybe I can end up on oprah like the crock people did!

i have bought a booth at a local art fair.
i don't know how i feel about this.
it feels....well.... odd.
i have only showed my work in galleries.
now i feel as if i'm peddling my stuff at a yard sale type event.

but for the past 1 to 2 years i don't have the money to "make art" and to "show art"
i have chosen to make art.
so i have boxes of stuff everywhere, in every corner
i have been asked to be apart of a few shows. awesome.
this makes me feel like my work speaks for itself.
i have sold too many pieces to count.
i love that someone likes my stuff enough to hang it on their wall!

so i am holding my final verdict until after this show.
i will count it as a success if i AT LEAST...
make my money back that i have spent to rent the booth and tables.
i have made a few fun/clever pieces specifically for targeting people to "buy"

once upon a time...

A "ginormous" bull lives in a sunny green pasture.
He frolics and eats his weight in grass.
He has the girls at his disposal.
He lives the life of a superstar stud bull.

Then one night he gets bored,
or decides the grass may be greener on the other side of the fence.
He breaks free and goes on an adventure...

SMACK, CRASH, BANG, *insert noises of a major vehicle cash here*

only to be struck by an oncoming van.
A van carrying two lucky ass people since the bull is darn near as big as the van.
A van with such severe damage ya think it was car/18wheeler, instead of car/cow

Bull with his tongue hanging out and feet stuck straight out
he is flat dead.
A chain is fastened around the bull's neck attached to the back of a pick-up truck.
As the poor dead bull gets pulled away before the eyes of all
we must remember the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

THE END

yes i did see this and yes it was like a version of the twilight zone. and even though i shot video of the bull getting whisked away by chain we sure the hell didn't air it! lol

why yes i did get to hold and play with a timber rattlesnake for a story for work. i also got his latest shed skin in the mail which to me, is a treasure. his name is Hollywood and he is 60inches long and over 7lbs.

even tragedy can be pretty, a grain bin explosion hurting four people, but the rainbow is amazing!

on a story for the dreaded budget cuts. my third that week, i was going out of my mind. i came across this tric and played with it since the gym was empty where the meeting was gonna be.

a FABULOUS laundry mat. i was two hours away doing a school budget cut story (same week as above shot of the tric) and on my way back to the station i came across this laundry mat. i spun a pretty quick u-turn and took about fifty photos in various filters, films, positions.... i LOVED this laundry!

so i watched "the box"

my wife did not watch this so i relayed to her the idea
and asked her what she would do?...

i say i could not push it.
i would want to but know i couldn't.
my wife would push it.
zero hesitation.
i don't fault her for this either.
she is practical and logical.
i am emotional and sentimental.
i said what if it's a baby,
she says stop over analyzing it,
i say how could i not?
she argued people die all the time.
irrelevant i say.
both are lives that i have no hand in creating
or taking.
i don't even believe in god or an afterlife?
yet i couldn't do it?
couldn't decide someone's fate by pushing a button.
is a life worth 1million dollars?
2million?
i still don't fault her since i see her logic.
people DO die all the time.
i have been there when some have died,
to see those last minutes,
the last time they will know the love of someone they hold close...
i couldn't do it since i am too damn emotional.

i saw a shooting star tonight,

i sold another print from my etsy store... this makes me crazy excited! it sold to a person in Tampa Florida, my dream city to live in. so even if i can't live there my art is gonna!!!

also one of the three art pieces i donated to the Humane Society Auction Dinner sold to a cool older lady whom i saw with it. i went over to her and told her i took the photo in Chicago. (i was walking around randomly by myself while it was sprinkling and took a shot of a bicycle. it was then framed &matted". we start talking and she drops this bomb... ok get this..... dummm dumm dummmmm.... are you holding your breath and sitting down...she says she has an original "ORIGINAL" picasso, yes i said picasso..... the guy who is an artistic genius.. yeah that guy. p.i.c.a.s.s.o. best part, she is hanging her rocket original RIGHT NEXT TO HER ORIGINAL PICASSO!!!!!! holy shitballs. i am hanging next to a picasso! and then she asked me to sign the print for her, could have blown me over with a feather...

i also have a sculpture show that i was asked to be in on April 2. this is exciting since i made two really cool sculptures for it!!! i will share when they are completely finished. just think old toys..... they are soooo fun! i need to price them so they don't sell.... shhhh don't tell "g". lol

i may be getting a new camcorder (our 10 yr anniv.), ?, any suggestions? i want something to be able to plug in a microphone to, good quality, and CHEAP CHEAP! i got a little extra for my income tax return so it isn't a lot of moolah to play with. :) and something that is easy to get uploaded! cause what good is a camcorder if it takes an act of god to get the video onto your computer.

the 48hr film festival is coming, i can either join the group of friends locally or do one myself.... which would you suggest? i don't think i work well with others when it comes to film-making... too many heads thinking. so "g" says to do one myself and i kinda like that idea... ? i like the idea of shooting it completely with my iphone and editing it all in imovie!

i got this little guy at an estate sale, he was in the corner of a basement closet on the floor. he is barely 3 inches big. i drive this certain lady crazy i see on/off through the summer at these things cause i always tend to find the stuff they don't price. they either consider it trash or they overlook it and then she has to give me a price on the fly, i think he was a quarter. he HAD to come home with me. i have him tucked away in a safe place with my other treasures,

this motel is actually still open in a close-by town. i know for a fact i would never stay there but the sign is what i look at every time i drive by. i couldn't even tell you what's on the other side of the road.... and yes it is named after the ol' ABE.

If i would have listened to the person giving me grief about going on this mini adventure i would never have gotten this shot. i cherish the fact that i can think for myself and still went on my walk-about. i met an amazing old guy and got some fabulous shots!

i.heart.graffiti. i can't read it but i sure can look at the color choices, lines, shapes with a sense of wonder at the creativity it took to do this artform. we have railroad tracks nearby and i am treated with a train occasionally with "tags" all over it. this was one train and it made me late for work to grab these but hey, five minutes for joy..... i'll take it every time.

i have a lot of time in the work car, driving, visiting cool little unique towns. one of the multiple favorite parts of my job. i get paid to make art..!
